SMS for clinics and hospitals in Nepal

Clinics and hospitals use SMS for appointment reminders, report-ready notices, follow-up dates and OTP codes for patient portals. SMS reaches patients on NTC, Ncell and Smart Telecom, including older patients with basic phones. These messages are transactional on a plain reading. Keep diagnoses and test results out of the text, because phones are often shared.

What SMS messages can a clinic send to patients?

Clinics typically send appointment confirmations and reminders, notices that a lab report is ready to collect, follow-up and vaccination due dates, doctor schedule changes and OTP codes for an online portal. Each message tells the patient what to do next and when. Keep it under 160 English characters so each patient uses one credit.

Example message

Reminder: your dental appointment is tomorrow at 10:30 AM. Please arrive 10 minutes early. To reschedule, call the clinic front desk.

What should a clinic leave out of an SMS?

Leave out diagnoses, test names, results and medicine details. A text can be read by anyone who picks up the phone, and many families share one handset. Say that something is ready or due, and ask the patient to collect it in person or log in to a portal protected by an OTP code.

Example message

Your lab report is ready. Please collect it from reception with your token number, Sunday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM.

Do patient SMS reminders need consent?

Appointment reminders, report notices and OTP codes relate to care the patient asked for, so on a plain reading they are transactional, not advertising. Health camp promotions or package offers sent to past patients are advertising and need the recipient's consent under the Advertisement (Regulation) Act 2076. This is general information, not legal advice.

Can SMS show the clinic or hospital name?

Yes, after approval. Request a branded alphanumeric sender ID of up to 11 characters from the dashboard, for example a short form of the hospital's name. Until it is approved, messages go out under a shared default sender ID, so put the clinic's name in the first words of the message.

How does a clinic start sending SMS?

Fill in the lead form on the contact page, then complete KYC with the clinic's or hospital's documents. A reviewer approves the account, usually within 2 to 3 business days. If your booking software will send reminders, connect it to the REST API and keep the API key on your server, never in the app.

Questions people also ask

Can our patient portal send OTP codes by SMS?

Yes. Your server calls the API with the code and the patient's number. Use a send-only API key and keep it out of browser and mobile app code.

Can reminders go out in Nepali?

Yes. Nepali is supported. A Nepali reminder holds 70 characters per segment, so keep it short to use one credit per patient.
